about

Dead Ambient is organised chaos as electronic music — or perhaps more appropriately, bordering-on chaos. It's a continuous folding, then refolding, of recycled material into threads that twist around one another in a kind of linear collage — a brutal origami. You'd be hard-pressed to explain exactly what is occurring from moment to moment — pure repetition is scarce, and noticeably striking when deployed — but Dead Ambient doesn't suffer for this. There is a consistent logic to these arrangements and forms that doesn't feel overwrought, or laborious.

Be they composite facets of 'classic' ambient, corroded hi-def sound-design, net concrète, or more immediately identifiable vocal detours, all the materials are smoothed and contoured into vibrant passages. Certain segments hearken back to the sublime cacophony of Berlin’s Janus, while others call more to mind the textural fascinations of other producers operating out of ‘Australia’.

Those familiar with r hunter’s prior output will be treated to an upscaling of the scope toyed with on rrrrrrafael. For those of you who haven’t yet ventured into this territory, Dead Ambient easily sits outside the catchall musical connotations of both ‘death’ and ‘ambience’. There are clear allusions to the departed, be they spelled out ("R.I.P.", "Spectre") or explicated in semi-cryptic passages of spoken-word. But this is not funereal or lethargic music — no, there's a palpable urgency and insistence in this ‘ambient’ kitchen-sink electronic music. It’s alive, and it’s captivating.
